Christmas · Spin the Wheel

A Christmas spin-to-win popup for people buying for someone else

December shoppers are not hunting for a percentage. They are buying a gift for a particular person, against a delivery date your carrier sets, and they would like it wrapped. A prize wheel lets you hand out exactly those things, one spin per shopper, in exchange for an email. This page is the whole campaign: a prize table built around gift wrap and shipping, copy for the four screens, display rules for 1 to 24 December 2026, and the duplicate you run from Boxing Day into January.

  • Free plan, no credit card required
  • Opens on 1 December, closes on Christmas Eve
  • Winner decided on the server

Why a wheel in December

Gift shoppers need a reason to finish the basket

In December the visitor usually knows what they want and who it is for. What holds them at the basket is the price, the delivery date and whether it will look like a present. A wheel can hand out all three as prizes, and it asks for an email before it does.

Prizes that fit a gift

Free gift wrap, free shipping and a small extra in the parcel cost you little and remove the exact worries a gift shopper has. Percent-off slices sit beside them for the shopper who is also buying for themselves, and a win asks for an email on the Post-Play screen before the code appears.

Twenty-four days on one schedule

Display rules take a start date and an end date in your time zone, with weekday and hour windows if you want them. Set Tuesday 1 December to Thursday 24 December 2026 and the wheel opens itself on the first of the month and retires itself on Christmas Eve, with nobody at a keyboard.

One spin per shopper, then a January sequel

A frequency cap of once every 30 days, plus the switch that hides the wheel from visitors who already claimed, gives each shopper one spin for the month. When the month is over, duplicate the campaign, swap the codes and dates, and the Boxing Day wheel is ready before the paper is off the presents.

The prize table

A Christmas prize table you can copy

Six prizes and a small leftover, weighted towards the things a gift shopper worries about. Type the labels, codes and chances into the Prizes panel exactly like this and the wheel draws itself.

SliceReward codeWin chanceWhy it is there
Free gift wrapXMASWRAP30%The prize a gift shopper actually wants, and it costs you paper and a minute at the packing bench. Most spins land here.
10% offXMAS1025%The December discount you were going to run anyway, for the shopper who adds something for themselves.
Free shippingXMASSHIP20%Takes the delivery cost off the basket. A fixed cost to you, a real saving on a single gift.
Free express upgradeXMASFAST10%The shipping-cut-off prize. Worth little on 3 December and a great deal on the 20th, when standard delivery no longer makes it in time.
20% offXMAS207%The prize people mention to friends. Rare enough to protect December margin.
A free stocking fillerXMASGIFT3%A small item of yours added to the order for nothing, through a code that makes that one product free. Three shoppers in a hundred get a story to tell.
Try againnone5% (leftover)Drawn automatically as a grey slice because the prizes add up to 95%. Kept small on purpose: December is not the month for a wheel that mostly says no.

Read down the chances and the arithmetic is plain: with these odds, every hundred spins hand out roughly thirty gift-wrap codes, twenty-five 10% codes, twenty free-shipping codes, ten express upgrades, seven 20% codes and three stocking fillers, and five shoppers see the Losing screen. Change any percentage and the editor shows the new chance of not winning as you type.

The ChilliPopup wheel editor: a Prizes panel with 50% OFF at 50% chance, 25% OFF at 25% and Free shipping at 10%, an equal-chances toggle, a Chance of not winning: 15% readout, and the Play, Post-Play, Winning and Losing tabs above the wheel preview
The Prizes panel where the table above goes: a label, a reward code and a win chance per prize, and the chance of not winning computed for you.
  • Create the codes in your store first: Shopify Discounts, WooCommerce Marketing → Coupons or Wix Marketing → Coupons. Restrict XMASWRAP and XMASGIFT to the gift-wrap product and the stocking-filler product, and give every code the same end date as the wheel, 24 December at 23:59.
  • ChilliPopup never creates or applies codes: it reveals the code you pasted, and only inside a winning result. The configuration that reaches the browser has every code stripped out, so the page source never gives away XMAS20.
  • Want a lump of coal instead of a grey slice? Mark a prize as a Losing option and call it Coal. It keeps its own label and colour on the wheel, counts as a loss and never returns a code. Give it the 5% and the seven rows total 100%, so no grey Try again slice is added.
  • Want nobody to lose in December? Raise the chances until they total 100%, or switch on "Give all prizes equal chances". Every spin then wins something, and the Losing screen is never shown.
Copy for the four screens

What each screen says in December

A wheel has four screens: Play, Post-Play, Winning and Losing. Each is its own canvas in the editor. Write {{prize_label}} and {{prize_code}} anywhere in the Post-Play or Winning copy and the won prize fills them in.

Play

Spin for a little extra under the tree

Headline: Unwrap a little extra.

Sub-line: Spin once for free gift wrap, free shipping or up to 20% off, valid until Christmas Eve.

The disc itself is the button, so "Click the wheel to start" is all the instruction it needs. Lead with the gift wrap, not the percentage: it is the prize that tells a gift shopper this wheel is for them.

Post-Play

You won {{prize_label}}

Headline: {{prize_label}} is yours.

Sub-line: Leave your email and your code appears right here. Use it on any order before 24 December.

One email field and one button. The screen only appears after a win, so nobody is asked for an email in exchange for nothing.

Winning

Your code is {{prize_code}}

Headline: Add {{prize_code}} at checkout for {{prize_label}}.

Sub-line: Order by Monday 21 December and it arrives before Christmas.

Put your own last shipping date in that sub-line; in the final week it is the most useful sentence on the wheel. Confetti is on by default here. Add a "Find a gift" button pointing at your gift guide.

Losing

Coal this time

Headline: No prize on this spin, but the gift guide is open.

Sub-line: Everything ordered by 21 December still arrives in time, and gift wrap is available at checkout.

A losing spin in December should still solve the shopper's real problem, which is choosing. Point the button at the gift guide or your most popular gifts, never at a dead end.

Display rules

Rules for twenty-four days

A wheel carries the same display rules as every ChilliPopup popup: six triggers, targeting, frequency caps and a schedule. This is the set that fits a month of gift shopping.

  • Schedule: start Tuesday 1 December 2026 at 00:00, end Thursday 24 December at 23:59, in your time zone. If your last orders leave on the 23rd, end it there instead.
  • Triggers: scroll depth at about 50%, because gift shoppers read product pages and scroll through gift guides, plus exit intent for desktop shoppers on their way out. The first trigger to fire opens the wheel.
  • Pages: one page-URL rule, doesn't contain /checkout, keeps it off the checkout, where a spin only interrupts someone already paying; collection, gift-guide and product pages all keep it. Page rules are any-match: a campaign shows wherever at least one of its page rules is true, so use either contains rules for the pages you want or a single doesn't-contain rule, never both.
  • Frequency: once every 30 days, plus "hide from visitors who already claimed", so each shopper gets one spin and one code for the whole month.
  • Audience: everyone, on desktop and mobile. December brings first-time visitors who arrived from a gift search, and they are exactly who the wheel is for.

How it works

Codes, wheel, rules: three steps

A wheel is a popup with a game on its Play step. If you have built a ChilliPopup popup before, you already know the editor.

1

Create the codes in your store

Make one discount code per prize (XMASWRAP, XMAS10, XMASSHIP, XMASFAST, XMAS20, XMASGIFT) in Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix or whatever runs your checkout. Restrict the wrap and stocking-filler codes to their products, and set every code to expire when the wheel does.

2

Build the wheel

Pick The Deal Is Right or Spin to Win, recolour it in cream, green and gold, type the prize table into the Prizes panel and write the four screens. Every block is drag-and-drop, and a serif from the Google catalogue or your own font gives it the feel of a card.

3

Set the rules and publish

Enter the schedule, triggers, page rules and frequency above, then publish. If the ChilliPopup pixel is already on your site there is nothing else to install: the wheel appears on 1 December on its own and stops on Christmas Eve.

Design

Green and gold, or red and cream, but not all of it

There is no dedicated Christmas template, and you do not need one. Both wheel themes are fully editable, and a wheel reads as Christmas after a handful of colour changes.

  • Start from The Deal Is Right if most of your traffic is on phones: it is a portrait, mobile-first card with a gold claim button already on the Post-Play step. Start from Spin to Win for a landscape layout with the wheel on the left and the headline on the right.
  • Recolour the popup background to cream, set the rim, pointer and hub to gold, alternate the slices between deep green and deep red, and set the slice text colour to white so the labels read on both. Two slice colours are enough; a wheel in six festive colours is hard to read at a glance.
  • Put the gift in the headline: "Free gift wrap or up to 20% off" stops a gift shopper where "Save 20%" does not. The slices tell the truth about the odds.
  • Give the last week its own wheel: duplicate the campaign, end the original on your standard-shipping cut-off, schedule the copy from the next day to the 24th, raise the express-upgrade chance and rewrite the Winning and Losing screens around the new deadline. Two wheels, and no editing on the day.
  • A/B test one thing: one click creates a Variant B, you choose the split, every visitor sticks with their version and the results sit side by side with a confidence indicator. Test gift wrap against free shipping as the headline prize, or a Losing screen that points at the gift guide against one that points at your most popular gifts.

The same editor for all four games: Play, Post-Play, Winning and Losing are tabs, Prizes is a panel, and every colour, block and font is yours to change.
Boxing Day

What to read before the January sale

A wheel gets two reports: the popup report every ChilliPopup campaign has, and a game report built from the server's own record of each spin. Read them on Boxing Day, before you publish the duplicate.

  • Opens against submissions, by day: twenty-four days is long enough to see the shape of the month. If the last week did most of the work, next year's wheel can start later and the ordinary popups can carry the first half.
  • Claimed wins by prize: the chart shows whether gift wrap and shipping were claimed in the proportions the table predicted. A prize that was won but rarely claimed is a prize shoppers did not want; drop it from the January wheel.
  • The claims table: each winner's email, prize, code, device and time. It lives in your dashboard; ChilliPopup does not send emails and has no Mailchimp, Klaviyo, HubSpot, Zapier or CSV export connector today.
  • Redemptions are counted where the codes live, in your store's discount report. Set the December codes against the claims table and you know what the wheel cost and what it brought in, before you price the January one.
The ChilliPopup Popup Analytics dashboard: opens, unique views, clicks, submissions, conversion rate and field inputs over a date range, with an interaction chart
The popup report every wheel gets. The game report adds spins, wins, losses and claimed wins by prize.

Good to know

Christmas wheels, answered

Can the wheel run for all of December without me touching it?
Yes. Display rules take a start date and an end date in your time zone, so a wheel scheduled for 1 to 24 December 2026 opens on the first of the month and opens for nobody on Christmas Day. Weekday and hour windows narrow it further if you want them. You can also unpublish it by hand at any time, and a duplicate of the campaign carries the design on into a Boxing Day or January version with new codes and dates.
How do I give away gift wrap through a wheel?
Create a code in your store that makes your gift-wrap product free, restricted to that product, and paste it as the prize's reward code in the Prizes panel. When a shopper wins, the Winning screen reveals the code; they add gift wrap and the code at checkout and pay nothing for it. ChilliPopup does not create or apply codes in your store, and it reveals the code only inside a winning result.
What happens to the wheel after my last shipping date?
Whatever you decide in the schedule. The simplest option is to end the wheel on your standard-shipping cut-off. The more useful one is a duplicate that starts the next day and runs to 24 December with prizes a late shopper can still use: a free express upgrade with a higher chance, a code valid into January for a gift that can arrive late, and Winning and Losing screens that carry the new deadline. Both are ordinary start and end dates; nothing is switched over by hand.
Should anyone lose on a Christmas wheel?
That is your call, and the editor supports all three answers. Prizes whose win chances add up to 100%, or the "Give all prizes equal chances" toggle, mean every spin wins. Leave a leftover below 100% and the wheel grows a grey Try again slice for exactly that chance; the table on this page leaves 5%, and the editor shows the chance of not winning as you type. Or mark a prize as a Losing option and label it Coal: it keeps its own label and colour on the wheel, counts as a loss and never returns a code.
Is there a Christmas wheel template?
Not a dedicated one. The two wheel themes, The Deal Is Right and Spin to Win, are the starting points; you recolour the rim, pointer, hub and slices, change the background and rewrite the copy on each screen in the editor, with Google fonts or your own. ChilliPopup's AI drafts popups, forms, surveys and quizzes from a sentence, but the four prize games start from their themes rather than from a prompt.
Can I reuse the wheel for the January sale?
Yes. Duplicate the campaign, then change what January needs: new codes from your store, a schedule from Saturday 26 December to the middle of January, percent-off slices in place of gift wrap, and a Losing screen that points at the clearance collection. The December game report tells you which prizes were claimed and which were not, so the January table starts from evidence rather than a guess.

Build the wheel before December starts

Type in the prize table, write the four screens, set 1 to 24 December, and publish. On the first of the month the wheel opens itself, the server decides every spin, and every code you give away comes with an email. The Free plan includes all four prize games.
