Beauty & skincare · Spin the Wheel

A spin-to-win popup for beauty brands, where the prize is a sample

Skincare is bought on trust and rebought on habit. A prize wheel suits both halves: the prizes are the samples, travel sizes and gifts with purchase you already give away, the email is asked for only after a win, and a second wheel aimed at returning customers reappears when the bottle is running low. This page is the whole setup: a prize table built from gifts rather than discounts, copy for the four screens, display rules that wait for the ingredients list, a routine quiz to run alongside, and the report to read afterwards.

  • Free plan, no credit card required
  • Prizes that cost you a sample, not a margin
  • Winner decided on the server

Why a wheel for beauty

A sample is the cheapest prize you own, and the start of the next order

Beauty shoppers hesitate for a reason a discount does not answer: will it suit my skin. A wheel whose slices are samples, travel sizes and gifts with purchase answers it, at odds you set, and asks for an email only once the shopper has won.

Gifts instead of discounts

Most slices carry a deluxe sample or a travel size, which cost you their unit price rather than a slice of the whole order, and put your product on the shopper's shelf. The two percentage slices are there for the shopper who was going to buy anyway, at odds you set. The roll happens on our server; the browser only animates to the result.

A second wheel for the second bottle

Skincare runs out. Display rules target returning visitors separately and cap frequency at once every so many days, so a duplicate of the wheel can greet a customer who comes back weeks later with a replenishment prize. Leave the switch that hides the wheel after a claimed prize off, and they can win again.

A quiz to find the routine

A wheel gets you the email; a routine quiz tells you what the shopper wanted. ChilliPopup quizzes ask a few multiple-choice questions, one step at a time, and count how many people chose each option. Run a skin-type quiz on the same site from the same install, and read the two side by side.

The prize table

A beauty prize table built from samples

Six prizes and a leftover, three of them gifts. Type the labels, codes and chances into the Prizes panel exactly like this, and the wheel draws itself, Try again slice included.

Try againnone6% (leftover)Drawn automatically as a grey slice because the prizes add up to 94%. Small on purpose: with gifts this cheap, most spins should win.

With these odds, every hundred spins hand out roughly thirty-five deluxe samples, twenty free-shipping codes, fifteen 15% codes, twelve travel sizes, eight full-size gifts and four 25% codes, and six shoppers see the Losing screen. More than half of the wins are gifts whose cost you know to the cent. Change any percentage and the editor shows the new chance of not winning as you type.

The ChilliPopup wheel editor: a Prizes panel with 50% OFF at 50% chance, 25% OFF at 25% and Free shipping at 10%, an equal-chances toggle, a Chance of not winning: 15% readout, and the Play, Post-Play, Winning and Losing tabs above the wheel preview
The Prizes panel where the table above goes: a label, a reward code and a win chance per prize, and the chance of not winning computed for you.
  • Create the codes in your store first: Shopify Discounts, WooCommerce Marketing → Coupons, or Wix Marketing → Coupons. The three gifts are free-product-with-purchase discounts, two of them with a minimum basket; the two first-order codes are one use per customer.
  • ChilliPopup never creates or applies codes: it reveals the code you pasted, and only inside a winning result. The configuration that reaches the browser has every code stripped out.
  • Want every spin to win? Raise the chances until they total 100%, or flip on equal chances, and the Try again slice disappears. A sample on every spin is a sampling programme with an email attached to each sample.
  • The replenishment wheel: duplicate this campaign for returning visitors and swap the slices: a deluxe sample of a product they have not tried, 10% off a refill, free shipping over $40, a travel size of the next step in the routine.
Copy for the four screens

What each screen says

A wheel has four screens: Play, Post-Play, Winning and Losing, each its own canvas in the editor. Write {{prize_label}} and {{prize_code}} anywhere in the Post-Play or Winning copy and the won prize fills them in.

Play

Spin for a sample

Headline: Spin for your first-order gift.

Sub-line: One spin, one gift or code. Deluxe samples, travel sizes, and a full-size gift on the lucky slice.

Keep the copy soft and short; a hint like "Tap the wheel to start" is all it needs. Say sample, not discount: it is the word the shopper came for.

Post-Play

You won {{prize_label}}

Headline: {{prize_label}} is yours.

Sub-line: Enter your email and we will show your code right here. It is valid for 14 days.

One email field and one button. The screen appears only after a win, so the shopper who lands on Try again is never asked for an email in exchange for nothing.

Winning

Your code is {{prize_code}}

Headline: Add {{prize_code}} at checkout for {{prize_label}}.

Sub-line: Pop the gift in your basket, enter the code, and the price comes off once your order qualifies.

Confetti is on by default; switch it off if it fights a quiet, clinical brand. Match the sub-line to how your store handles gifts, since some need the gift in the basket before the code applies, and add a "Shop the routine" button pointing at the collection the sample belongs to.

Losing

Not this time

Headline: No gift on this spin, but your routine is a few questions away.

Sub-line: Take the skin quiz and find the right first step. Every order over $40 ships with a sample anyway.

Point the button at the page where your routine quiz runs, or at the collection for the skin type the shopper was browsing. A losing spin that ends on a quiz still ends with an answer.

Display rules

Rules that wait for the ingredients list

A wheel carries the same display rules as every ChilliPopup popup: six triggers, targeting, frequency caps and a schedule. Beauty shoppers read before they buy, so the wheel should arrive after the reading, and come back when the bottle runs out.

  • Triggers: a time delay of about 20 seconds on the page, long enough to read the ingredients and the how-to-use, and exit intent for desktop shoppers who are leaving. The first to fire opens the wheel. On long product pages, scroll depth at 60% does the same job on a phone.
  • Pages: a single page-URL rule, contains /product, shows it on product pages and nowhere else, so the cart and checkout never see it. A shopper adding a serum to the basket does not need a wheel between them and the button. Page rules are any-match: a campaign shows wherever at least one of its page rules is true, so use either contains rules for the pages you want or a single doesn't-contain rule, never both.
  • Welcome wheel, audience and frequency: new visitors, once every 30 days, with "hide from visitors who already claimed" switched on. One spin, one gift, one email.
  • Replenishment wheel: duplicate the campaign, set the audience to returning visitors and the frequency to once every 45 days, and leave the already-claimed switch off. A customer who comes back when the bottle is running low finds a fresh spin and a fresh gift, and can win again on the visit after that.
  • Schedule: the welcome wheel needs none; it runs all year. Give the replenishment wheel a start date when the gifts are in stock and an end date when you want to review it.
  • Devices: desktop and mobile both on. Check the card on a phone before you publish.

How it works

Gifts, wheel, quiz: three steps

A wheel is a popup with a game on its Play step. If you have built a ChilliPopup popup before, you already know the editor.

1

Set up the gifts and codes in your store

Make one discount per prize (SAMPLE, GLOWSHIP, GLOW15, TRAVEL50, FULLSIZE90, GLOW25) in Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix or whatever runs your checkout. The gifts are free-product-with-purchase discounts with a minimum basket; the first-order codes are one use per customer.

2

Build the wheel

Pick The Deal Is Right or Spin to Win, soften it to your packaging's palette, type the prize table into the Prizes panel and write the four screens. Every block is drag-and-drop, and your own fonts are welcome.

3

Set the rules, publish, add the quiz

Set the time delay, page rules, audience and frequency above, then publish. Then build a routine quiz in the same editor, drafted by ChilliPopup's AI from a sentence if you like, and target it with the same rules. One install runs both.

Design

Ivory, blush, one accent from the packaging

There is no beauty template, and a beauty brand would not want one. Both wheel themes are fully editable, and the changes that make a wheel feel like a skincare brand rather than a game show take a few minutes.

  • Start from The Deal Is Right if your traffic is mostly phones (it is a portrait, mobile-first card) and remove its game-show banner. Start from Spin to Win for a landscape layout with room for a product shot beside the wheel.
  • Soften the palette: an ivory or blush background, the rim, pointer and hub in one accent lifted from your packaging (a sage, a terracotta, a deep plum), slices alternating between that accent and white, with the slice text in the opposite colour. Grey Try again slices sit quietly in that palette.
  • Name the gifts on the slices: "Deluxe sample" and "Travel-size cleanser" read as gifts; "Free gift" reads as a catch. The headline carries the top prize: "Spin for a full-size gift".
  • Your typeface: Google fonts and your own custom fonts are both supported, so the wheel can use the face on your labels. Confetti is on by default on the Winning screen and switches off for a brand that whispers.
  • A/B test the sample against the discount: one click creates a Variant B, you choose the split, every visitor sticks with their version and the results sit side by side with a confidence indicator. Test a wheel led by the deluxe sample against one led by 15% off, and let the claims decide.

The same editor for all four games: Play, Post-Play, Winning and Losing are tabs, Prizes is a panel, and every colour, block and font is yours to change.

What the claims table tells a beauty brand

A wheel gets two reports: the popup report every ChilliPopup campaign has, and a game report built from the server's own record of each play. A beauty brand reads them for two things: which gift people wanted, and who came back.

  • Opens against submissions: how many shoppers saw the wheel, how many spun and how many left an email, by day and by device. That is the conversion rate of the sampling offer.
  • Claimed wins by prize: the chart shows whether the travel size was claimed as often as its 12% predicted and whether the percentage slices were claimed at all. If the discount slices go unclaimed, next quarter's wheel can be all gifts.
  • The claims table: each winner's email, prize, code, device and time. It lives in your dashboard; ChilliPopup does not send emails and has no Mailchimp, Klaviyo, HubSpot, Zapier or CSV export connector today, so the replenishment reminder is the wheel itself rather than an email.
  • Redemptions and the quiz: redemptions are counted in your store's discount report. Beside them, the quiz's option counts tell you which skin types and concerns the audience chose, question by question.
The ChilliPopup Popup Analytics dashboard: opens, unique views, clicks, submissions, conversion rate and field inputs over a date range, with an interaction chart
The popup report every wheel gets. The game report adds spins, wins, losses and claimed wins by prize.

Good to know

Beauty brand wheels, answered

Can a prize be a free sample rather than a discount?
Yes. A prize is a label, a reward code and a win chance; what the code does is decided in your store. Create a free-product-with-purchase discount there for a deluxe sample, a travel size or a full-size gift over a minimum basket, and paste its code as the prize's reward code. ChilliPopup reveals the code inside a winning result and never creates or applies it.
Can the wheel come back when a customer's product is running out?
Frequency rules do that. Aim a duplicate of the wheel at returning visitors, set it to once every 45 days, and leave the switch that hides the wheel from visitors who already claimed a prize switched off; a customer who returns weeks later finds a fresh spin and can win again. The interval is yours to set, in days or in visits.
How do I run a skin-type quiz alongside the wheel?
Build it as a ChilliPopup quiz: a start screen, a few single-choice or multiple-choice questions and a thank-you screen, drafted by the AI from a sentence if you like, and targeted with the same display rules as the wheel from the same install. Quiz analytics count how many people chose each option, question by question. The wheel collects the email; the quiz tells you which routine the audience was looking for. How quizzes work →
Is the email asked for before or after the spin?
After a win. A winning spin opens the Post-Play screen, where the shopper enters an email to claim the sample or code; submitting it opens the Winning screen. A losing spin goes straight to the Losing screen, so nobody is asked for an email in exchange for nothing, and every address in your claims table belongs to someone who won something.
Is there a beauty wheel template?
Not a dedicated one. The two wheel themes, The Deal Is Right and Spin to Win, are the starting points; you recolour the rim, pointer, hub and slices to match your packaging, swap the background, switch the confetti off if you like and rewrite the copy on each screen. ChilliPopup's AI drafts popups, forms, surveys and quizzes from a sentence, but the four prize games start from their themes rather than from a prompt.
What does a sampling wheel cost to run?
The Free plan is $0 per month, forever, needs no credit card and includes all four prize games with the full editor, A/B testing and analytics; it covers 1,000 visitors a month on one domain. Pro is $29 per month and Business $79 per month, each with a 14-day free trial. A small "Powered by ChilliPopup" badge shows under the wheel on every plan; the samples are the only cost the wheel adds. See the plans →

Put your samples on a wheel

Type in the prize table, write the four screens, set the time delay and publish. Every sample you give away comes with an email, every spin is decided on the server, and the wheel is waiting when the bottle runs low.
